FAQ on Via Ferratas

Most frequent questions and answers

“A via ferrata is the connection point between hiking and climbing” (Michele Dalla Palma)

The fantastic thing about via ferratas is that they allow you to access, climb and traverse amazing mountain scenery without needing prior climbing experience.

“Via Ferrata” comes from Italian and can be translated as “iron road” or “iron way.”
The main component of any Via ferrata is a thick steel cable that is fixed on the rock with bolts drilled every few meters. This is the main “lifeline” providing safety and limiting falls.

In addition, beside or below the cable, there are metal steps and rock features that make climbing easier. Via Ferratas routes often have overhanging sections, bridges of different types, ladders, zip lines and chains.

All of the routes we guide are fully equipped and safe to navigate when using the correct equipment -and using the equipment correctly.

In terms of your personal equipment, we provide top of the range harness, helmets, lanyards and anchor slings with carabiners so that you can have a rest or pause with confidence at any time. All our equipment is commercially made and EN certified.

Reasonable fitness and a cool head are all that is needed to experience the majority of via ferrata routes. In the past 10 years we have taken children, teenagers and septuagenarians to easy and more challengig ones. We use ropes to protect children, inexperienced and less confident participants so that they have fun safely and get used to the heights in a gentle and progressive way.
Booking a Via Ferrata or a rock climbing course is always done by previous arrangement. Please contact us on silvia@rockclimbingmalagaspain and we will try to schedule it on your preferred dates.
You will have these options:

• Re-schedule for a mutually convenient date and time

• Try an alternative activity such as rock climbing and / or abseiling in the local caves -where it is protected from rain and wind-

• Transfer your booking to someone you wish to another future date.

• If cancelled at least 21 days before the meeting date and time, you can claim a total refund.

• If cancelled at least 7 days before the meeting date and time, you can claim a 50% refund.

• If cancelled 6 days or less before the meeting date and time, you will not receive a refund but you will be able to reschedule to a mutually convenient date or transfer your booking to someone else.

The Via Ferratas can vary considerably in length and difficulty. They are graded according to the physical difficulty and the amount of exposure involved in completing them.
In this website we have decided to use the words: ‘easy’, ‘moderate’, ‘difficult’, ‘very difficult’ and ‘extremely difficult’

*Read more on grading systems…

There are at least five international grading systems that change from country to country but because of its completeness, in 2016 the UIAA (International Association of Mountaineering and Alpinism) Commission decided to adopt the Italian scale for grading the difficulties of Via Ferrata as its international standard.

SCALE OF DIFFICULTIES FOR VIA FERRATAS
Italian scale

The main criterion refers to the overall engagement and this is given in the scale with these letters as abbreviations:
F, PD, D, TD and ED.

This would translate as:
F: easy
PD: some difficulty
D: difficult
TD: very difficult
ED: extremely difficult

There are additional parameters – graded 1 to 3- related to the technical and physical demands, the exposure and the environment.

Below is the scale adopted by UIAA
Other scales are often used so you might find other difficulty scales when you look at the specific information on a Via Ferrata.

Two other evaluation systems have established themselves: the Hüseler, using a verbal classification and the Schall scale that uses a letter instead: the letter A or the statement of “less difficult”, while the highest level of difficulty corresponds to E or “extremely difficult”.

A -easy- / K1
Flat to steep with frequent big and rocky steps but with some exposed passages.
Equipped with wire cables, chains, iron clamps and individual short ladders.
Via Ferrata equipment, steady footing and a head for heights recommended if you don’t have a rope protecting you.

B -Moderately difficult- / K2
Might have steep rocky terrain, some smaller rocky steps and exposed places.
Equipped as above but might include more longer and vertical ladders.

Equipped as above but can include some over hanging ladders. Clamps and pins can also be further apart.
Steady footing and a head for heights, good condition, power and endurance in arms and legs
Via ferrata equipment strongly recommended Children and less experienced may have to be protected by a rope.

D -Very difficult- / K4
Vertical, often overhanging terrain, mostly very exposed
